The federal government is being urged to release the latest emissions data after it missed a Senate imposed deadline.

The Senate passed a motion last October calling for greenhouse gas data to be released no later than five months after each quarter.

Last Friday was the due date for December's data but it remains nowhere to be seen.

Climate Council CEO Amanda McKenzie says the government might be delaying the release as it might show emissions are continuing to rise.

"The coalition government has a history of burying bad news on climate change," she said in a statement on Monday.

"It has repeatedly released data when it is unlikely to draw significant attention. We've seen emissions data released on Christmas Eve and late on a Friday afternoon ahead of football grand finals."

The delay could be the result of a ministerial reshuffle, with reducing emissions last week shifted from former environment minister Melissa Price's workload to Energy Minister Angus Taylor's.

A spokesperson for the Department of Environment told AAP in a statement on Monday the December greenhouse gas data would be released "soon".
