Govt announces $7m for crime prevention

Over $7 million would be allocated to 40 criminal prevention projects across Queensland if it wins government, Labor says.

A raft of crime prevention projects across Queensland will receive a share in over $7 million of federal funds if it wins government, Labor says.

Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare was campaigning in the high-profile southeast Queensland electorate of Forde when he announced the funding to 40 crime prevention projects.

The money will come from a $40 million fund that uses funds confiscated from criminals.

Over $2 million will be given to Queensland Police Citizens Youth Clubs (PCYCs) and Blue Light organisations.

Mr Clare told reporters investing in projects that aim to prevent crime is an important social strategy.

"I'm a young bloke who grew up close to PCYCs," Mr Clare said.

"In my neck of the woods in western Sydney, my PCYC was a bit of a refuge during the time when Cabramatta was the heroin capital of Australia.

"What it does is it change lives. It helps young people from falling off the tracks and no-one does it better than our PCYCs."

Mr Clare also announced 13 councils in Queensland would receive over $2.2 million in funds to install community safety features such as CCTV cameras and lighting.

Labor last week dumped its candidate for Forde, Des Hardman, in favour of former Queensland premier Peter Beattie. The Liberals hold the seat by 1.6 per cent.
