Govt considering pollution tax:Nat senator

A government senator says the coalition is weighing up a pollution tax on cars to encourage a switch to battery-powered vehicles, a move he's staunchly against.

Queensland Nationals senator Barry O'Sullivan says the government is considering a pollution tax to increase the take-up of electric cars but he remains fiercely opposed to the move.

Senator O'Sullivan said governments of all persuasions were heading towards taxing people so they would switch to battery-powered vehicles.

"I know that there's contemplation by my own government - which I'll resist until the minute I leave here - to start to put in place tax elements to tax people who use fossil fuels," he told a Senate estimates hearing in Canberra on Monday.
