Govt drought support needs change:farmers

The National Farmers Federation doesn't want a kneejerk reaction from the government after Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's tour of drought-stricken regions.

Australia's drought-affected farmers want improvements to a support allowance as they face the risk of climatic conditions that could make future events longer and more severe.

National Farmers Federation president Fiona Simpson this week joined Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on his whistle-stop tour of drought-hit areas in NSW and Queensland.

But while many are hurting after years of drought, Ms Simpson says they don't want a rushed, quick fix response.

"It's a drought that we're seeing out there now but we also have to respond to climate change and the fact that that could make these events more severe and more regular," she said.

Farmers have lobbied the government for changes including determinations about what factors identify a period of drought, improvement to the farm household allowance and support for farmers to prepare during the good times.

Specific issues with the allowance include the three-year time limit, income and asset tests for eligibility and an application process that is "complex and difficult".

Mr Turnbull has described the agriculture sector as the "ultimate renewable industry of Australia".
