Govt investigates faster city-regions rail

The federal government will spend $20 million investigating the viability of faster rail connections between three capital cities and regional hubs.

Faster rail connections between three capital cities and regional centres will be investigated by the federal government as part of a $20 million business case study.

The viability of quicker Sydney to Newcastle, Melbourne to Greater Shepparton and Brisbane to Moreton Bay and the Sunshine Coast routes to allow city workers regional lifestyles will be considered over the next 12 months.

Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack says the three projects would involve a mix of track upgrades and entirely new tracks, and that each proposal will go through an independent assessment by Infrastructure Australia once the business cases are complete.
