A government backbencher has warned he may vote against the Trans-Pacific Partnership unless the sugar sector gets a better deal.

Government MP George Christensen is prepared to cross the floor over the Pacific trade deal, concerned about the treatment of sugar producers.

Despite welcoming the freshly-inked 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership as a win for agriculture, the Nationals backbencher says the deal is only "okay" for sugar.

His support for the deal is contingent on other factors, including a potential additional allocation for sugar for the United States, he said in a statement on Tuesday.
