Another immigration detention centre will close because of successes in stopping the influx of asylum seeker boats, the government says.

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton said the Bladin Alternative Place of Detention in Darwin will close on April 7.

Mr Dutton said Bladin was opened by the former Labor government in June 2013 to cope large numbers of boat arrivals.

"The immigration detention network ballooned under the Labor Government and came at a significant cost. The closure of Bladin means that taxpayers save more than $18 million a year in lease costs alone," he said in a statement.

Mr Dutton said the centre was the 11th detention facility the government had closed in just over a year, due to its success in halting illegal boat arrivals.

Those now in Bladin will be transferred to other sites or, if eligible, moved into the community or released on bridging visas.

Mr Dutton said the immigration department will continue to liaise with stakeholders and local suppliers who have had business arrangements with the Bladin facility.
