GPs must now report lung diseases in Qld

Queensland has new laws that will help determine how many workers are being diagnosed with deadly lung diseases from working with coal and manufactured stone.

Queensland doctors will have to raise the alarm when they diagnose people with two deadly lung conditions emerging among coal miners and workers who cut manufactured stone.

New laws have been passed to ensure Queensland Health is alerted when doctors diagnose cases of black lung disease, caused by coal dust, and silicosis, caused by the inhalation of crystalline silica dust.

Health Minister Steven Miles says cases will be compiled on a register, so authorities can determine how many workers have been affected.
