The road accident unfolded on Sunday when Adelaide couple Rupendra and Anamika Datta were traveling to the Taj Mahal in a hired SUV when a burst tyre sent the vehicle into a safety barrier, before flipping on its roof and landing in the path of oncoming traffic.

Ms Datta, along with her sister Sonia, 25, and two daughters, Neetika and Pipsas, aged 12 and 15, died at the scene.

Her son Tirvijai, 20, died later in hospital.

ABC News reported on Wednesday that Mr Datta's father, N K Paliwal, survived the car accident, but died in hospital after suffering a heart attack upon hearing of his family's fate.

Mr Datta, 48, survived the accident, but remains in hospital with what is believed to be a spinal injury.

He runs the Urban Indian resturant in Adelaide and a staff member confirmed with AAP that the eatery would trade as usual because "that's what Rupendra would have wanted."

"We're just hoping for the best," the staff member said.

"We're hoping for Rupendra's recovery."

He said Mr Datta had already undergone surgery in India and was expected to require further operations.
