With a new grand-daughter due soon, Malcolm Turnbull is glowing about girls.

During a visit to the seat of Higgins - held by his Assistant Treasurer Kelly O'Dwyer - with Diamonds star Jo Weston, the prime minister gave a pep-talk to young netballers.

"You can do anything," he told them excitedly on Monday.

"Like Jo, you could play for Australia and forge a career.

"Or like Kelly, you could be a cabinet minister and a new mother.

"I want you to look at these women and recognise that there should be no limit to your ambitions," Mr Turnbull went on.

"No limit at all. Whatever you dream of you can achieve. Whatever you think you might be able to do, whatever you imagine, you can do it."

It was an uplifting if not one-sided message.

"I'm thrilled to meet the boys as well, of course," the prime minister quickly added.

Yet with a grand-daughter of his own on the way he was especially pleased to meet the girls.

His daughter Daisy is due with her second child in September and to help out he's collecting girls' names.

"As the mothers here know, grandfathers' suggestions are politely received but not necessarily acted on, but nonetheless I am taking careful note of the names of all the girls that I meet."

Mr Turnbull used the visit to Malvern to pledge $4 million towards the development of a new multi-purpose sporting facility.
