Broadcaster Stan Grant isn't ready to jump into politics just yet.

The indigenous journalist confirmed to the National Press Club in Canberra he has had conversations about running for parliament.

"If we don't get involved, then we are nowhere, but is it me? Is it this year? Is it this time? I need to get a lot more things to line up before I make that step," he said on Monday.

Mr Grant wouldn't say what party he would philosophically side with.

"I tell you what I'm philosophically driven to ... the idea that we cannot go on like this, that I cannot end my life where my life began with our people on the margins, locked up and dying."

Asked about being a divisive figure, he said: "So be it".
