Disaster assistance has been unlocked for areas of Tasmania devastated by floods.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has used a visit to Launceston and Devonport on Thursday to announce joint help with Premier Will Hodgman, covering 18 local government areas.

The assistance includes immediate grants of up to $750 per family, $200 per adult and $100 per child, as well as grants to cover housing repairs, household items and temporary living expenses.

Mr Turnbull says both governments are committed to helping communities get back on their feet.

"Our thoughts are with all those affected, including those who have lost loved ones, those that have suffered damage to their properties and possessions, and all those enduring the emotional stress that such a natural disaster brings," he said.

Mr Hodgman says the immediate assistance will help those hit the hardest.

"The massive clean-up job is under way and there is a long and difficult recovery ahead and we urge everyone to remain calm as we work through this natural disaster together."

The premier acknowledged the hard work of emergency services, including volunteer SES crews.
