Greece leftist chief to annul bailout if elected

Greek radical leftist party Syriza, tipped as the possible winner in June 17 elections, will seek to "annul" the country's bailout deal with the EU and the IMF, its leader Alexis Tsipras says.

"The bailout is either applied or annulled," Tsipras said. "We ask for the vote of the Greek people in order to annul it."

Tsipras, 37, likened the loan agreement to a "deadly medicine" which has caused a "tragedy" in Greece, where more than a million people are jobless and suicides are mounting amid a deepening economic recession.

"You don't save a patient's life by changing the dosage of a deadly medicine. You need to change the medicine itself," the leftist leader said.

"The bailout deal is an automatic pilot to utter disaster," he added. "It is tantamount to returning to the drachma."
