The Abbott government has welcomed the Greek parliament's decision to pass new austerity measures and hopes it will lead to greater stability in the country and across Europe.

Greece voted to undertake tough reforms in order to unlock a new rescue package worth up to 86 billion euros ($A127.63 billion) as violent demonstrations broke out on the streets of the Greek capital, with anti-austerity protesters clashing with police.

"Greece can now provide a platform for greater economic growth and get itself out of the difficulties it has had," parliamentary secretary Alan Tudge told Sky News on Thursday.

Labor backbencher Nick Champion believes Alexis Tsipras's government made matters worse by holding its referendum, as have the "flint-hearted" economists within Europe.

"It is always better to pay your debts rather than to default on them, but those who the debts are owed to have to be responsible about them as well," he told Sky News.
