Well maintained and green, vacant neighbourhood lots make residents feel safer, a University of Pennsylvania study has found.
Researchers randomly selected two clusters of vacant lots and found the greener lot transformed the physical make-up of a neighbourhood from a crime attractor to a deterrent.
One lot received a make-over. Following this, compared to the three months previous, total crimes including gun assaults were lowered.
