Green jersey leader Kittel abandons Tour

Australian Michael Matthews now leads the Tour de France points classification after German Marcel Kittel crashed and abandoned the race.

German sprint ace Marcel Kittel has withdrawn from the Tour de France, meaning Australian Michael Matthews now leads the points classification.

Kittel crashed about 20km into stage 17 and hurt his shoulder.

Matthews had reduced Kittel's green jersey lead to just nine points when Kittel crashed and abandoned the tour soon after.
