Greens leader Richard Di Natale has backed calls for the federal government to help fund upgrades to Arrium's struggling Whyalla steelworks.

Senator Di Natale has also criticised the government for claiming its free trade agreements prevented the mandatory use of Australian-made steel in local projects.

"If those trade agreements are so good for jobs, then why are they holding back support for an industry that could be part of Australia's long-term future," he told reporters in Adelaide on Monday.
