The Greens have introduced a private bill that would force the Turnbull government to bring asylum seeker children on Nauru back to Australia.

The bill, introduced in the Senate on Wednesday, would ensure children can't be detained for more than 30 days, forcing the immigration minister to place children and their families into the community.

"Children don't belong in detention and this bill will force the government to finally get them out," Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
