The Greens have called for an independent inquiry into the death of another asylum seeker on Nauru following unconfirmed reports he took his own life.

Sarah Hanson-Young says she wants Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to launch an investigation into the death of the Bangladeshi man.

The 26-year-old went to hospital on Monday but died on Wednesday after he suffered multiple cardiac arrests, the Department of Immigration said.

Ms Hanson-Young said people on Nauru were now saying the young man's death was suicide.

"There are reports coming out of the island it was the result of a overdose on pills," she said in Brisbane on Thursday.

"We haven't had that confirmed."

Ms Hanson-Young said that was why an independent review and investigation was needed.

"People are dying in the care of the Australian government and the Australian people have had enough," she said.

Ms Hanson-Young also hit out at the prime minister over his comments that Queensland MP George Christensen had a point when he said he didn't want Syrian refugees relocated to his electorate because there weren't enough jobs.

"We've got Immigration Minister Peter Dutton and now we've got the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull backing some of their most racist and intolerant members of parliament to run a campaign in this election against people we've said we would welcome to our country," she said.
