The Greens have put the boot into the AFL for waiting months to rule a transgender player ineligible for the women's draft.

Hannah Mouncey, a former men's handball player who began her gender transition in 2015, had been waiting since June to hear before the AFL made its announcement on Tuesday.

"What Hannah has been put through is unacceptable," Greens senator Janet Rice told reporters in Canberra on Wednesday.

The Greens will call on the AFL and other football leagues to clarify their transgender policies and eligibility guidelines for gender-segregated sports.

Mouncey, barred less than 24 hours before the draft, has played eight games in the Canberra's women competition this season, kicking 17 goals.

Sports were a big issue for trans people," Senator Rice said.

"It's really important that we get this right so that trans people feel welcome and feel they are able to participate in the sport of their choice."

The senator, who is married to a transgender woman, said Australian sports should build off International Olympic Committee regulations.
