The Australian Greens are demanding Tony Abbott honour aid commitments made to Afghanistan by the previous federal government.
Greens leader Christine Milne says Australia must continue to help the war-torn country with health and education projects, particularly those which benefit women.
Around 800 interpreters who assisted troops should also be given Australian visas, Senator Milne says.
"Is the major slash in our aid budget going to start with withdrawing from any support for civil society in Afghanistan?" Senator Milne told reporters in Hobart.
"If we now even abandon what we did do, which was build some health and education services, then you have to say what was the long-term objective in Afghanistan?"

Prime Minister Abbott visited troops in Afghanistan this week, signalling an end to Australia's involvement in the 12-year conflict.
Senator Milne paid tribute to the 40 killed and 260 wounded in the country, adding Australian troops should have been brought home earlier.
"It's time to really look at the policy failure in Australia that led to us staying in Afghanistan way beyond when we should have come home," she said.
Senator Milne said interpreters should be offered visas on top of Australia's humanitarian refugee intake.
