The Greens party has launched a Refugee Health Policy that it says will help to ensure asylum seekers in offshore detention have adequate access to health care.
Greeens health spokesman Richard Di Natale says the plan will be put to Parliament after the election as an amendment to the Migration Act.
Senator Di Natale says it would ensure independent oversight of the healthcare provided to refugees in detention by sending health experts to check that appropriate services are offered.
He says the plan would go some way towards reducing the harm inflicted on refugees by the major parties' policies.
"We've heard stories from a number of health professionals who've been working in detention facilities who say that they don't get access to the right equipment, medical tests and so on, and that we need to do much better," said Senator Di Natale.
"And we also need to ensure that people who are self-harming, people who are attempting to take their lives are also getting access to appropriate counselling and other mental health services."
