Australian Greens leader Christine Milne has been returned to the position unopposed at a party room meeting.

Melbourne MP Adam Bandt was also returned unopposed as deputy leader during the meeting at parliament house in Canberra on Monday.

Greens party rules require a leadership ballot at the first party room meeting after a federal election.

Senator Milne was returned despite a slip in the Greens vote at the September 7 poll. Mr Bandt extended his margin in the lower house seat of Melbourne.
