The idea has been discussed for decades and earlier this year Labor released a final report into the proposal which said it would $114 billion to construct the almost 2,000 kilometre link between Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne.
The Greens say they would fast track the building process which would would provide 200-thousand jobs over the lifetime of the project and, once completed, take 365,000 cars off the road every year.
Greens MP Adam Bandt says it's about time Australia built a high-speed rail link.
"Australia and Antarctica are the only continents without high speed rail underway and I'm worried if we leave it up to Labor and Liberal the penguins will beat us to it," Mr Bandt says.
"The Greens want to put high speed rail on the fast track. Well one of the most important questions we face as a country is how we will move people between our cities and how we will support growth in our regional cities."
