The Greens want to take 10,000 places from the skilled migration program and use them for family reunions.

Australia's annual migration intake of 190,000 has 128,550 place for skilled migrants and 57,400 for family reunions.

Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young on Friday will unveil her party's election policy to boost family reunion places and reduce the fees involved.

"Families are paying more than $50,000 per person to dodge 50-year waiting lists, making family reunion exclusively available to wealthy households," she said.

Greens MP Adam Bandt says families in his seat of Melbourne are crying out for help.

"In some cases people are unable to bring their elderly parents over to share their final years together because they can't afford it or the waiting list is decades long," he said.

The party also wants to lift the bar that prevents refugees who arrived by boat from applying for family reunion visas.

The policy has not been submitted to the Parliamentary Budget Office for costing.
