Greens Senator Scott Ludlam has introduced a bill to parliament that would stop in-program advertising on SBS, in a bid to protect the network from commercialisation.

He says Labor was opposed to ad breaks on SBS at the 2007 election, and this bill will allow the ALP to deliver on its election position.

Not for profit group Save Our SBS, in its bid to seek 'adequate government funding', as well as ending in program 'interruptions', claimed before the election that the Greens and Labor would present what it called the 'best deal for the network.'

The Greens have called for funding for the ABC and SBS to be as high per capita as public broadcasters in the UK, although the BBC is funded by a compulsory licence fee, which often comes under attack from other media outlets.
