The Greens will preference the ALP in the Melbourne seats of Batman, Higgins, Melbourne, Melbourne Ports and Wills but could run open tickets elsewhere.

"Voters in the inner city should now have the full confidence to know that if they vote Greens they'll be voting for a change of government, their preferences will be going to Labor, and they won't be helping the Liberals," Melbourne MP Adam Bandt told reporters on Wednesday.

The announcement came after Labor ran a "very big fear campaign" in the five seats wrongly suggesting the Greens had done a deal with the Liberals, the Melbourne MP said.

However, when asked if the Greens party was considering running open tickets in other Victorian and NSW seats as part of a preference deal with the Liberals, Mr Bandt said that question would need to be directed to Victorian state director Larissa Brown.

He was quizzed about the possibility of open tickets in Bruce, Conrangamite, Chisholm, Dunkley, Grayndler and Sydney.

"In lots of places the local branches and the Greens have said we want to put power back in the hands of voters and say 'Vote 1 Greens' and allocate preferences yourself," Mr Bandt said.

"That will be very uncontroversial if they do that. That's happened at previous elections."

The Greens are worried the ALP and the Liberal party are planning a "dirty deal" on preferences.

Mr Bandt believes Labor intends to preference Liberals in South Australian seats that Nick Xenophon could potentially win, in return for the Liberals preferencing the ALP in Melbourne seats where the Greens are strong.

"It would be the sell-out of the century," the Greens MP said.

"But that's what's on the cards. Make no mistake."

Mr Bandt was asked on Wednesday if Ms Brown was meeting Liberal Victoria president Michael Kroger to discuss preferences.

The Melbourne MP's spokesman later told AAP "there is no meeting".
