Greens to push for euthanasia laws in SA

The Greens have vowed to introduce a new voluntary euthanasia bill to the South Australian parliament next year.

The Greens will make another bid to pass voluntary euthanasia laws in South Australia after next year's state election.

Following a number of failed attempts over recent years, Greens MP Tammy Franks says the party will try again by introducing a bill in the SA parliament next year.

"Today we saw the Victorian parliament take one step closer to compassion," she said after the historic vote to back assisted dying laws in the Victorian lower house.

"Here in SA we have seen bills fail by just a single vote.

"Compassion is edging ever closer and politicians are starting to show the courage to allow the choice for those who want it."

Ms Franks said the Greens believed dying with dignity should be a basic human right.

The previous attempt to pass voluntary euthanasia laws in SA was defeated in parliament's lower house earlier this year after a conscience vote by all MPs.
