Greens want more Antarctic research

The Greens want to pump money into Antarctic research in a bid to better understand climate change.

The Greens want to almost double the amount of time an Antarctic research vessel is out at sea and hire 30 scientists to study ice-sheet collapse.

Increasing the amount of days the CSIRO's RV Investigator can sail from 180 to 300 will cost $194.5 million over the next 10 years, while adding 30 scientists to the Australian Antarctic Division will cost $44 million over the same period.

"The work of Australia's Antarctic scientists is pivotal in understand the risk of climate change," Greens Senator Peter Whish-Wilson said on Sunday.
