Greens want stronger discrimination laws

The Australian Greens say they are the only party that wants to strengthen anti-discrimination laws.

The Australian Greens will urge whoever forms the next government to strengthen anti-discrimination laws.

The minor party has pledged to revive the Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Act, which was delayed by the government and didn't go to parliament before it rose.

Greens legal affairs spokeswoman Penny Wright said Labor lost its courage on the laws after the opposition rejected the move to improve equality even before seeing any detail.

"The government dropped plans to consolidate anti-discrimination laws across the country, leaving the Greens as the only party ready to strengthen protections for some of our most vulnerable people," she said on Friday.

The Greens will also go to the election promising to set up compensation for people wrongfully convicted of federal offences.

They also want the next government to ratify the Optional Protocol Against Torture.
