The Australian Greens are willing to agree to a carbon price lower than what they want if it means getting the mechanism in place sooner rather than later.

Greens senator Christine Milne has reportedly said her party would support a more limited climate change strategy, so long as it provided a platform for "greater levels of ambition".

Last week, she argued a carbon price of more than $40 would be needed to drive the switch from coal-fired power to gas.

However, the Greens now say they'll accept a compromise.

"I know the price won't be high enough to drive the transformation that we need in the Australian economy, but it will get things started," Senator Milne told Tuesday's edition of the Australian Financial Review.
