Lucas says the people of the constituency have made history. "Thank you so much for putting the politics of hope above the politics of fear." Lucas told supporters who had waited through the night to hear the results.
Caroline Lucas won the seat with a significant 8.4% swing against the incumbent MP Labour's Nancy Platts.

When talking to the BBC Ms Lucas indicated that "people are fed up with the tired old parties" highlighting a mood for change that has swept across the electoral landscape.
The Greens tactic pre-election was to focus resources on what they believed were the three most winnable seats, with the result being a clear vindication of such tactics, but leaving over 200 other candidates out in the cold.
"This isn't just a moment when one MP out of more than 600 is elected. It's where a whole political party takes, for the first time, it's rightful place in our parliament."
When speaking to the BBC Ms Lucas said that despite having not much in common ideologically with the Conservative Party she would all issues on a "case by case basis."
In the greens second targeted seat, Norwich South, the party's deputy leader, Adrian Ramsay, increased the Green vote to 15%, but still came fourth
The seat was won by the Liberal Democrats who were able to oust Labour's former home secretary, Charles Clarke.
The third target seat, Lewisham and Deptford in south London, is yet to declare, however candidate Darren Johnson is seen as having little chance of removing the incumbent Labour MP Joan Ruddock.
