Greg Bird breaks thumb in Super League

Former NRL star Greg Bird will have surgery on his injured thumb and is expected to miss up to eight weeks of the European Super League season.

Australian star Greg Bird will be out of action for six to eight weeks with a broken thumb suffered in the Catalans Dragons' first defeat of the Super League season.

Rugged forward Bird has made a big impact on his return to the France-based club from the NRL this season - they are coming fifth in the 12-team competition after four matches - but he is now facing surgery on Monday.

The former NSW and Gold Coast Titans player sustained the injury as his team was crushed 46-10 by fourth-placed Leeds Rhinos at Headingley on Friday night.

It was a tough night for the Catalan Dragons who have also lost winger Jodie Broughton for between four and six months after scans confirmed he suffered a torn bicep.

Broughton is due for an operation on Friday.
