The inferno that ripped through Grenfell Tower in London's North Kensington in the early hours of June 14 "must be a wake-up call" for policy makers, according to British Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn.
He made the statement in response to Prime Minister Theresa May in parliament on Wednesday, who said the fire was a result of cladding that "was not compliant with the building regulations".
"It's an issue that has been continuing for many years, for decades in terms of cladding being put up in buildings there are real questions as to how this has happened," she said.
Mr Corbyn stood up and said the fire instead highlighted a wider issue.
"What the tragedy of Grenfell Tower has exposed is the disastrous effects of austerity," he said.
"This disregard for working class communities, the terrible consequences of deregulation and cutting corners.
"I urge the prime minister to come up with the resources needed to test and remove classing, retrofit sprinklers, properly fund the fire service and the police so that all our communities can truly feel safe in their own homes."
