Penrith coach Anthony Griffin admits his new side's love affair with close finishes has almost driven him to drink.

The Panthers finally ended up on the right side of a close finish this NRL season, after they edged out Sydney Roosters 20-16 at Allianz Stadium on Monday night.

Jamie Soward piloted the Panthers to their third win of the season with a first class kicking game in the wet conditions.

And Griffin was happy to take the win any way it came, even if he isn't sure what to make of their close games.

When asked if he felt his glass was half empty or half full given the Panthers with some more luck could have been 6-1, the former Brisbane mentor, in his first year at the foot of the mountains, replied: "I am (a) half a glass man, but I don't know if it is full or empty.

"The good part is we can get ourselves into that position all the time. We have played some really good footy over the past month.

"We are hanging in there, we got a grip on the game there in the last seven minutes and didn't let it go and that will do our young blokes confidence the world of good."

Captain Matt Moylan believes the Panthers are improving every week.

"We are slowing building, we are improving every week," he said.

"It was good to get the points and hopefully we can build the season off that.

"It is pleasing to be in each game, and good to close that one out at the end."
