Nathan Grima's fairytale AFL comeback is moving closer to fruition, with Essendon coach John Worsfold confirming the former North Melbourne defender is a chance to face Geelong this weekend.
Worsfold is considering several changes to his side after the Bombers suffered a 61-point loss to Port Adelaide on Friday night.
Grima was forced into retirement by a chronic back injury in July last year, having managed just 86 games in seven seasons with the Kangaroos.
His last game was North's heavy loss to Sydney in the 2014 preliminary final, but having been a surprise top-up player for the Dons, has pushed himself into contention with solid form in the VFL.
"Grima's available this week, we didn't really consider him for selection last week around getting him as fit as we possibly can," Worsfold said on Monday.
"It's obviously a brilliant story to see him feeling good physically because his back injury was a pretty serious one. The fact that he's back playing footy at all, let alone AFL level, is great news."
Essendon were jumped early by the Power at Adelaide Oval, but Worsfold was happy with the way his charges worked into the game after a poor start.
The heavy loss came on the back of their surprise breakthrough win over Melbourne, the coach admitting the roller coaster ride of form was likely to continue as his thrown-together side developed chemistry.
"There's potential that our peaks and troughs are a bit more exaggerated (though)," he said.
"We're not the only club that's going to go through that - some of the great teams in the competition have those weeks as well.
"But we're still not really sure where we sit - there's a lot of challenges to learn about where we're at."
