Growth hormone program widened: Dutton

Older children will benefit from a decision to extend a growth hormone program, Health Minister Peter Dutton says.

Higher doses of growth hormones will become more accessible under changes to a federal program which helps 1900 Australian children, Health Minister Peter Dutton has announced.

Mr Dutton says the PBS scheme would be extended to cover young patients with hypothalamic-pituitary disease, which creates a hormone deficiency that can limit growth and impact puberty.

"Access to higher doses of growth hormone will especially help older children who have limited opportunity for further treatment before their skeleton has matured," Mr Dutton said in a statement on Thursday.
