Six guards have been assaulted by a prisoner and a visitor in a brawl at Melbourne's Port Phillip Prison.

Victoria Police confirmed the male and female staff members, assaulted at the Truganina jail just before midday on Saturday, were taken to various hospitals in a stable condition with non life-threatening injuries.

Ambulance Victoria confirmed paramedics treated eight people at the prison.

According to Nine News, the brawl inside the visitors centre took place when a male inmate and his male visitor launched an attack on the guards, before staff were able to get the "upper hand".

Police are investigating the cause of the fight, stating "the appropriate people are in custody".

Saturday's brawl follows another fight on Thursday in which two inmates were injured.

That incident inside the prison gym reportedly involved members of different bikie gangs.
