Guards, prisoner injured in SA jail fracas

Five guards and an inmate have been taken to Royal Adelaide Hospital after a disturbance at Yatala prison.

An inmate has attacked five prison officers at a South Australian prison while waiting for a scheduled court video link appearance.

The prisoner, in his late 20s, allegedly attacked the guards in the admissions area of Yatala Prison.

The inmate was rushed to Royal Adelaide Hospital where he remains in a serious condition, according to SA Correctional Services chief executive David Brown.

Mr Brown said no weapons were used in the attack to his knowledge.

The prison officers, who were "shaken up" by the incident, have been discharged from hospital but will be receiving ongoing psychological support.

"I personally, and the officers in my department, understand and take very seriously our responsibility when force is used to bring a situation under control," Mr Brown told reporters on Saturday.

Mr Brown said Correctional Services would cooperate fully with the police investigation into the incident.
