A US man has admitted to hiding an assault rifle in a DVD player and a 9mm pistol in an Xbox console and posting them to customers in Australia.

Adam Joseph Bunger, 34, entered guilty pleas on Wednesday to four counts of exporting firearms internationally during an appearance in a Bowling Green, Kentucky, court.

He faces a maximum 25-year prison term when he is sentenced in May.

Bunger had been selling guns to buyers around the world via the secretive German-based website Black Market Reloaded that connects buyers and sellers of illicit items, including guns, alcohol, drugs and counterfeit clothes, birth certificates and other documentation.

"Bunger was not a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, or licensed dealer of firearms," the plea agreement states.

"Nevertheless, he wilfully engaged in the business of dealing in firearms."

Bunger's downfall began when a package posted by a "John Smith" from Bowling Green was intercepted by authorities in Sydney in June.

Inside the Xbox cavity authorities found a Modelo Super 9mm pistol and empty magazines.

Australian Federal Police contacted US authorities and it was discovered on July 8 a "John Smith" shipped three more packages, two by international express mail and one by global priority, from a Bowling Green post office.

On July 13 two more packages, one to Australia with the disassembled assault rifle hidden inside a DVD player and the other to the UK with an "Uzi-style pistol" inside a hollow Xbox console, were seized at the post office.

In August a parcel at the Bowling Green post office addressed to a Swedish address contained a Taurus .22 calibre pistol hidden inside a metal computer switching power supply box.

Bunger maintained his innocence following his September arrest but on the eve of his March 5 trial agreed to plead guilty to the four charges.
