Protesters have placed 7,000 pairs of shoes outside of the Capitol building in Washington DC with each representing a child's life lost due to gun violence since the Sandy Hook massacre in 2012.
Activists began placing shoes before sunrise and stood on the Capitol lawn holding banners reading #NotOneMore and "7,000 kids killed".
The demonstration included shoes from children who lost their lives to guns, shoes of celebrity activists and shoes of ordinary citizens from all over the US, according to ABC News.
The impromptu memorial was coordinated by global activist group Avaaz.
The demonstration comes ahead of National Walkout Day on 14 March, where students will walk out of school for 17 minutes in honour of the 17 people who were killed at MS Douglas High School in Florida in February.
It also comes before March for Our Lives on 24 March where US citizens will protest for stricter gun control laws.
