Gun quicks skip Shield, eye all four Tests

Pat Cummins, who has been told to skip next week's Sheffield Shield game, believes Australia's frontline attack will play all four Tests against India.

Pat Cummins is confident Australia's gun fast bowlers will play all four Tests against India, having been ordered to skip next week's Sheffield Shield clash in Perth.

Australia's recent batting woes, exacerbated by Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft's suspensions, suggest the pressure will be on the team's bowlers against the top-ranked Test side.

Coach Justin Langer, selectors and medicos face a tough job managing Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood this summer; especially given an injury could put the stars at risk of missing next year's World Cup and Ashes.

Cummins surprised himself by playing an entire Ashes series during the previous summer, admitting on the eve of the first Test he was unsure if it would happen.

The express paceman is more bullish about the prospect of him, Starc and Hazlewood backing up for all four Tests against India's star-studded batting order.

"All we can do is try to get ourselves in the best position. I feel like we've done that," Cummins told reporters.

"I couldn't be happier with where I am and I think the other boys are the same ... there's no real niggles or anything we're worried about.

"Hopefully we don't spend five days in the field every Test, get through them all ... there's no reason at the moment why that won't happen."

Ironically, it is Australia's misfiring batsmen who will help determine whether Cummins' wish is granted.

Any chaotic collapses will ensure he spends longer in the field and is denied a decent break between innings.

Peter Siddle and Chris Tremain have been included in the Test squad as reserve pacemen.

Workload management has been a hot topic in Australian cricket circles for a long time.

That debate is likely to continue next week, when Starc, Cummins and Hazlewood are rested from NSW's Shield clash with Western Australia.

The trio will miss out on some quality match practice, with the India series starting the following week, but also a chance to bowl at Perth's new stadium prior to its maiden Test.

"It was a chat between the medicos, coaches and sectors. We came to the consensus," Cummins said.

"Ideally it would be nice to maybe sneak in another bowl.

"But that Shield game is probably a bit too close to the Test match. Just in case you're out in the field for two or three days and suddenly have a quick turnaround."

Cummins has played a single first-class match since recovering from his back injury but also three ODIs and some second XI games for NSW.
