University of Connecticut Police have evacuated the university's Avery Point Campus in Groton after a man armed with a gun was reported on campus.

University of Connecticut Police have evacuated the university's Avery Point Campus in Groton after a man armed with a gun was reported on campus.

An emergency alert was posted on the school's website at about 11:35 p.m. Monday ordering an evacuation until further notice.

Police did not say where the alleged gunman was spotted. According to the university's website, there is no on-campus housing at Avery Point.

The gunman later reportedly surrendered himself to police.

Students live in privately owned apartment complexes in Groton.

The Avery Point Campus, overlooking Long Island Sound, offers four-year degrees in marine sciences, maritime studies and American studies.
