Guy Sebastian's rise to fame

Who is the man who will become Australia's first official Eurovision contestant, carrying the hopes of our nation all the way to Vienna?

He's already played for the Pope and the Queen.

Now Guy Sebastian will be taking his soul-infused music to mainstream Europe, as Australia's wild card entry at Eurovision.

Like many Australians, he was born overseas and migrated with his family from Malaysia at a young age.

His parents are of Sri Lankan, Portuguese and English descent.

The family settled in Adelaide, where young Sebastian took up the violin and sang in a church choir.

When he graduated high school he began teaching vocals to schoolchildren and working as a sound engineer.

But it was his decision to enter a reality TV show singing contest in 2003 that would change the course of his life.

Guy Sebastian's mother would later tell media the family had no idea how big Australian Idol would turn out to be when he entered.

He became the show's first winner, and arguably its most successful alumnus.

Since then, the soul artist has performed across the country, and across the globe.

He's picked up four ARIA awards, and has been nominated for 23.

Sebastian is also a family man, marrying the love of his life, Jules, in 2008. They have two children, Hudson and Archer.
