GWS Giants defender Adam Kennedy tears ACL

Scans have confirmed Greater Western Sydney defender Adam Kennedy tore his ACL during the Giants' AFL loss to St Kilda.

Greater Western Sydney defender Adam Kennedy's AFL season is over, with scans confirming he has torn his ACL.

The Giants had feared the worst for Kennedy after he landed awkwardly during a marking contest in Friday night's loss to St Kilda at Etihad Stadium.

Club doctors will decide whether the 24-year-old will undergo a traditional knee reconstruction.

"This is devastating news for Adam, who'd started the season very strongly," Giants fitness boss David Joyce said on Saturday.

"We're confident that Adam will approach his rehabilitation with the same diligence and energy that he does every other aspect of his football.

"He's a really popular member of the playing group and the whole club is right behind him."

The Giants' backline have had a tough injury run to start the season, with Matt Buntine also out for the season with a torn ACL and Nick Haynes (hamstring) out for the next 10 weeks.

Gun recruit Brett Deledio (calf) and important veteran Ryan Griffen (ankle) also remain on the sidelines.

Midfielder Jacob Hopper will meanwhile undergo surgery on a broken finger, with the timeline for his return yet to be determined.
