GWS Giants midfielder Toby Greene has been charged with several assault-based offences following a nightclub incident in Melbourne on Monday night.

Victoria Police charged the 20-year-old from the Sydney suburb of Rozelle with intentionally causing serious injury, assault by kicking, assault with a weapon and criminal damage.

A 19-year-old from Malvern was also charged with similar offences.

The two men have been bailed to appear in Melbourne's Magistrates Court on September 25 - Greene's 21st birthday and two days before the AFL grand final.

The incident took place at Caulfield East hotel Zagame's, where it's understood a bouncer in his forties received facial injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics before being transported to hospital.

Police have CCTV footage of the incident.

The Giants confirmed Greene's charges on Tuesday afternoon, issuing a short statement.

"The club is taking the matter very seriously and has no further comment to make at this stage," it said.

Zagame's chief operating officer Jackie Booth said her company's focus was "on the wellbeing of our staff and assisting police with their investigation".

The Giants have the bye this weekend and gave their players leave following their heavy loss to West Coast in Perth on Sunday night.

The club will be expected to take a hard-line approach with Greene, with AFL football operations boss Mark Evans calling his charges "a serious rap sheet".

Those charges also include recklessly causing injury, affray, assault in company, unlawful assault, making threats to inflict serious injury and being drunk in a public place.

After attending Wesley College in south-east Melbourne, Greene played in the TAC Cup with Oakleigh Chargers.

He was drafted to the Giants at pick 11 in the 2011 draft, winning the club's best first-year player award and finishing runner-up in the club's best and fairest to Callan Ward.
