Injury-plagued GWS veteran Ryan Griffen has called time on his AFL career following the Giants' semi-final loss to Collingwood.

The former Western Bulldogs skipper has endured a terrible injury run since joining GWS ahead of the 2015 season, playing a total of 55 games in four years.

GWS coach Leon Cameron confirmed Griffen's retirement after Saturday night's game at the MCG, saying injuries had taken a toll on the 32-year-old.

Griffen broke the news to his teammates in the rooms after their season ended with a 10-point loss to the Pies.

"I've been speaking with Leon all through the season and in my mind I know it's time to hang them up," Griffen told reporters.

"It's a pretty emotional decision but I just know that it was the end this year.

"It's shattering that we couldn't have team success but I just know that it's time.

"It wasn't so much my age, I just think mentally the game has got to me ... I am slowing down a bit too."

Griffen played 257 games after the Dogs selected him third overall at the 2004 draft, claiming All Australian honours in 2013 and taking out the best-and-fairest honours in 2010 and 2013.
