GWS star Josh Kelly in doubt for AFL final

GWS midfielder Josh Kelly's knee injury isn't serious but the torn meniscus is expected to sideline him from the AFL club's semi-final against Collingwood.

Josh Kelly is likely to be ruled out of Saturday's AFL semi-final, although GWS haven't given up hope of their midfield star making a miraculous recovery.

Kelly limped off the SCG late in the first quarter of their elimination final against Sydney because of a torn meniscus.

The gun on-baller, whose value is perhaps best reflected by the fact North Melbourne offered him a nine-year deal in 2017 that was worth $10 million, played no further part in the match.

Scans have cleared Kelly of serious damage to the ligaments and tendons in his right knee.

The expansion club's medicos and football department are still discussing the best plan of attack for the 23-year-old. GWS are set to provide an update on Tuesday.

"Josh has had his scans and they've come back OK. It's a bit of wait and see," Giants key forward Jeremy Cameron told reporters on Monday afternoon.

"I'm sure he'll do everything right. I ran into him today and he's in good spirits, walking around quite well.

"He'll give it a red-hot crack to get up on the weekend.

"It's a finals game, do or die, so who knows what is going to happen."

Former Western Bulldogs captain Ryan Griffen and young gun Aiden Bonar headline the potential inclusions should Kelly be an enforced omission.

The temptation would be for the Giants' reigning best and fairest to back up and play their MCG clash with Collingwood, the winner of which will face Richmond at the same venue the following Friday.

However, coach Leon Cameron is well aware of the risks involved with picking Kelly.

Kelly's injury meant they were down on rotations for the majority of Saturday's derby against Sydney. It wasn't reflected on the scoreboard but several players were cramping late in the final term.

The Giants, who have endured an injury-cursed campaign, finished with zero fit men on the bench against Carlton in round 20 then one fit man on the bench in round 21 against Adelaide.

Cameron's team won both of those games but ran out of puff the following weekend, when a second-half fadeout resulted in a costly loss to the Swans.

"Being one down on the bench ... we've had to put up with it throughout the year," Jeremy Cameron said.

"It's been a big learning curve. To have a player of Josh's quality go down and play the way we did is enormous for the group and we'll take confidence from that."

Meanwhile, Hawthorn's Ben Stratton and West Coast's Brad Sheppard will battle to take any further part in the finals series after suffering hamstring injuries.

Tigers star Alex Rance copped a knee to his left foot against the Hawks but was able to play out the game.
