GWS want fans to make life hard for Swans

Greater Western Sydney hope home-ground advantage and the likely return of three AFL stars from injury will help them beat the Swans in their derby.

It's far from the longest road trip in Australia but Sydney sporting commuters know how taxing and frustrating a journey between the SCG and Olympic Park can be.

For AFL players at Sydney, it was an outing they were forced to undertake multiple times every year as part of the club's deal with ANZ Stadium.

That agreement was cut short in early 2016 but the Swans visited the city's west last year for two games.

It wasn't a happy hunting ground.

Losses to Greater Western Sydney, by 42 points in round 12 and 36 points in week one of the finals, represented the club's heaviest defeats of the year.

It is a trend GWS are keen to continue on Saturday night at Spotless Stadium, with gun midfielder Dylan Shiel calling on supporters to create a hostile environment for the visitors.

"Every team with a home ground would probably feel like they have some sort of an advantage. We definitely do," Shiel said, noting the game was likely to be sold out.

"When teams come to Spotless ... it's a difficult environment.

"I'm encouraging all Giants fans to get out there and make it as hard as they can for the Swans."

Shiel added the Giants were full of respect for what the Swans had managed since the inaugural derby in 2012.

"They're in really good form," he said.

"We've known since the birth of our football club how good the Swans have been, they won the premiership in our first year and consistently played some really good football since."

Meanwhile, hopes are growing at GWS over Steve Johnson, Toby Greene and Zac Williams returning this weekend.

"They got through training really well," Shiel said on Wednesday after the club's session.

"To my knowledge, they're going to put their hand up for selection.

"Hopefully, they recover well from training today and they'll be right for the weekend."

All Australian small forward Greene (ankle) and rebounding defender Williams (hamstring) missed GWS's recent draws with Geelong and Hawthorn.

Johnson, whose chronic knee injury continues to be managed carefully, didn't make the trip last week to Tasmania to face the Hawks.

The Giants sit second on the ladder and remain flag favourites with many bookmakers, but their premiership credentials will be tested by the in-form Swans.

GWS have only picked up one win from their past four games. The gap between their best and worst is immense and has often been sighted during 2017.

"You don't have to be Einstein to work out we're not playing the best footy that we're capable of at the moment," Shiel said.
