GWS defender Zac Williams has declared himself ready to play his first AFL match of the season in the cauldron of an AFL elimination final derby against Sydney.

The speedy and skilful back has quickly found form and fitness in the NEAFL after being sidelined with a ruptured achilles tendon since mid-January.

He notched 30 touches in his first game in the twos and 37 in his second.

While he went through ups and downs during his lengthy rehab period, Williams always planned to be back in time for finals.

"I feel ready to go and I''ve put all of the hard work in the last three months in terms of putting in a mini- pre season," Williams said on Wednesday.

"I'm just happy to be back playing but I've also put my hand up to play against the Swans.

"I have full confidence that if I come back against the Swannies, I'll be right to go."

While he badgered GWS coach Leon Cameron on an almost daily basis for a senior spot after just one NEAFL game, Williams admitted it was the right decision for him to play another game in the twos.

"I got more game time than I probably would have in the AFL team," he said.

" I think that's going to help me for hopefully next week."

Williams sees himself consulting veteran defender and mentor Heath Shaw, who returned to the club on Wednesday after having surgery on a season-ending knee injury.

"He just told me I had some big shoes to fill if I come back in to play," Williams said.

"Over the next couple of weeks before the game comes around, I'm sure I'll pick his brain and if I end up playing, I'll be pestering him."

With Williams injured and west Australian Nathan Wilson returning home to play for Fremantle, GWS have had to manufacture other rebounding running backs this season.

Williams praised Lachie Whitfield, who has been a revelation and a stunning success as a half back flanker.

"I think all eyes were on Lachie to fill those shoes I guess but he's done a magnificent job, he's played unbelievable all year," Williams said.
